Curious about what a traditional Czech breakfast looks like? Well, let’s share some recipes!
When I asked my Czech friend about her typical breakfast, she mentioned that it’s usually some bread with butter, cheese, and ham.
Bulgarians also love English breakfasts with eggs, bacon, sausages, and toast.
If you have a sweet tooth, there are many delicious pastries from the Czech Republic that you can’t miss for breakfast.
So, let’s check out some options and see what you like!

Czech Bublanina Cake is a delicious, fluffy cake containing blueberries and almonds. It has light, sponge-like batter, fresh blueberries, vanilla and sliced almonds.
It’s obviously a delicious breakfast treat but I also love it as a dessert with a cup of coffee.

Kolaches are delicious sweet pastries. They consist of a soft, somewhat sweet dough filled with fruit preserves, poppy seed paste, or sweet cheese.
You can choose any sort of filling you like but I suggest you try fruit jam first. And don’t forget about the streusel topping!
Švestkový tác, or Czech plum cake, is a popular delicacy in Czech cuisine. Halved plums are placed in a beautiful pattern over the buttery, soft dough.
I believe the streusel topping on this cake complements the tart plums just right.
This Czech pastry is a light, fluffy dough folded around a sweet filling of ground poppy seeds, and sometimes nuts or raisins.
Makový závin is especially great during festive times like Christmas and Easter.
This recipe uses a gluten-free flour blend so you can enjoy a traditional breakfast even with dietary restrictions.
These jam-filled rolls are called buchty in Czech. They’re sweet yeast rolls filled with apricot or plum jam.
If you don’t like jam, you can also try filling them with poppy seeds, sweet cheese, chocolate, or anything else you prefer.
These are perfect for a sweet breakfast or as a snack. Czechia has many more interesting snacks so check them out too!
Finally, we got to the savory side of our breakfast menu with obložené chlebíčky, or open-faced sandwiches.
A slice of rye bread or wheat bread can be topped with a wide selection of ingredients such as sliced meats, cheeses, spreads, and vegetables.
Common toppings for Czech open-faced sandwiches include ham, salami, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, pickles, and tomatoes.
Mayonnaise, mustard, or horseradish are among possible spreads for the bread.
