Manhattan’s Chinatown is world-famous for its plethora of Chinese options, and it’s a great place to fill the occasional craving— for Cantonese food, that is. But there’s only so much a girl can take, so we turned to Flushing’s Fu Run Restaurant (赋润东北美食) for a change of pace. Not only do they deliver on Northeastern Chinese cuisine, they also deliver on other regional Chinese dishes as well. Basically, Fu Run Restaurant makes some damn good food.
As an unfortunate hallmark of a good authentic Chinese restaurant, don’t expect attentive service or ambiance. They’re built for efficiency. Don’t get me wrong–no member of the staff is rude, but no one is going to stop and chat with you. Our waitress patiently answered our questions and made recommendations, but on a Friday night, the place was packed. We ordered classic dishes that whipped out of the kitchen surprisingly fast for a busy day, but then again, efficiency.
An appetizer of pork skin jelly is pork fat chilled until it forms a gelatin-like consistency, similar to lardo. It’s served cold, seasoned with soy sauce, garlic, and fresh cilantro. It’s surprisingly light and creamy, convincing me to believe the old Chinese adage that eating fatty pork can be good for your skin. To cut the fattiness of the pork (and all the other dishes we ordered), we opted for some healthy snow pea shoots.
Snow pea shoots are a pretty common dish found in authentic Chinese restaurants. I think they were a bit out of season because they were on the tougher side, but were still tasty.
Cumin lamb (pictured in feature photo) is the star dish! A classic Northeastern Chinese dish. The lamb was nice and tender on just the right side of crisp. It was seasoned just right, neither overwhelming with the cumin or too spicy.
The sweet and sour squirrelfish isn’t typically Northeastern Chinese, but we were in the mood to add some acidity to our selections. Wonderfully tender with a yummy sauce, the fish is fried first before being draped in a sweet and sour sauce.
I express the Northeast half of my heritage through my love of dumplings and noodles. And man, the feels I have for these dumplings. A balance of savory minced celery and pork in freshly-made skins that are neither too think or too thin. They tasted home-made and trumps by far any other dumpling place I have tasted in Manhattan.
Our visit to Fu Run Restaurant was well worth the trek to Flushing. I highly recommend going with friends so that you can sample more dishes.
