I’ve mentioned before how much I enjoy Cedar restaurant in Penn Quarter, especially for brunch. Cedar’s cocktails are creative and tasty, and even better, the drink names make me smile. After stumbling upon the Ideal Husband, I was told that if I was a fan of things spicy, I might want to try the Hot Husband. Bring it.
They’re really two of a kind. The original (Ideal Husband) recipe was developed by Beverage Manager Matt Perkins in conjunction with The Shakespeare Theater Company, for Oscar Wilde’s play The Ideal Husband. Get it?
The Hot Husband was created as a variation of the original drink, and it quickly became popular at Cedar according to General Manager Mikias Abebayehu. It’s hot because of the house-infused jalapeño pepper vodka, which comes from the rooftop herb garden. It’s Monday, so spice up the evening by making and drinking this cocktail at home. Maybe with that actual hot husband?
Wondering what’s behind the drink in the photo? It’s a white whiskey infusion. Happy drinking!

Tricia is a native Washingtonian, born and raised in Columbia Heights. She loves DC so much that she was only able to leave the city for one year after college and immediately came running back. She’s lived in Navy Yard for the last few years and is excited to see all the new restaurants finally moving into the neighborhood. Tricia works in PR during the day, and spends her nights trying out new restaurants in DC with friends or watching The Good Wife, Scandal, Bones and Grey’s Anatomy. A couple of years ago Tricia decided to eat at all of the 100 Very Best Restaurants until she realized she would be old and broke by the time she finished. Unfortunately, part of that fate might still come true due to her obsession with Uber.
