I drove from Richmond to Charlottesville VA, and came across a farmhouse brewery called Lickinghole Creek Brewery. The brewery is a water-conscious, environmentally-friendly brewery. They brew with well water (which is how they got their name)! They are located in Goochland County VA, about 2 1/2 hours from D.C, which makes it a perfect day trip.
What makes this brewery special is that they are a farm brewery, meaning they grow some of their own ingredients like hops and have plans to grow barley, which are two essential ingredients for beer. Other ingredients are pumpkins (for pumpkin ale), strawberries, herbs, figs, oranges and blueberries, all of which will be added to their beers. See their Farm Plan for more information.
They have a “tasting room” outdoors with plenty of picnic tables to sit and sample beers against the Appalachian Mountains. The staff is extremely nice. I asked about their hops and a worker immediately took me out to see them and answered all the questions I had. The beer is DELICIOUS and you can purchase a flight, or a bottle to experience there.
