Would You Like Fries with That?
[Sarah Hall] 01 27 2012Anyone who’s ever stepped foot into a McDonald’s knows that the fries under the Golden Arches are quite tasty. However, Washington has a few places which will make you wish they offered a super-size serving of these fried-to-perfection potatoes.

First, an ode to the inventors of the French fry–the Belgians. Brasserie Beck serves Belgian frites ($7-9), thinly cut potatoes fried golden brown with three mayonnaise-based dipping sauces: aioli, curry, and tomato. 1101 K Street NW, Washington, DC. 202.408.1717.
If you’re looking for grab-and-go french fries, Good Stuff Eatery has you covered. My personal favorite is Spike’s Village Fries ($2.49-$3.79) sprinkled in fresh thyme, rosemary and sea salt. The aroma from these fries is amazing.
Not big on spices? No worries–try an order of Sunny’s hand-cut fries ($2.39-$3.69) in traditional sea salt. No trip to Good Stuff Eatery would be complete without a visit to the dipping bar, for unique sauces like Old Bay Mayo or Mango Mayo to pair with those golden potatoes. 303 Pennsylvania Avenue SE, Washington, DC; 2100 Crystal Drive, Arlington, VA. 202.543.8222.
For the more adventurous eaters, I recommend the duck fat fried potatoes ($6) at Cedar, paired with a tarragon aioli perfect for dipping. These potatoes are a winning match with draft beer. Find them on Cedar’s bar bites menu in the bar and lounge from 5-10 pm.
You can also find rich, smoky duck fat fries ($8) at Bourbon Steak served in a trio–herb fries with ketchup; pastrami fries with thousand island dressing; and Cheddar fries with barbecue sauce. 2800 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC. 202.944.2026.
If you’re off the Hill, proceed directly to Dupont Circle’s Shake Shack. Trans-fat free and made from Yukon Gold potatoes, you won’t crinkle your nose at these crinkle fries ($2.65). If plain fries are simply too ordinary, get them covered in Shake Shack’s homemade American cheese sauce ($3.65). 1216 18th St NW, Washington, DC. 202.683.9922.
Whether accompanying a steak or a beer, French fries are a great addition to any meal. Even a meal of fries.
