REVIEW: Social-ly Acceptable
15 12 2009At the top of the stairs, Ken Noli and I am greeted by red velvet drapes, large, overstuffed couches, a chest of drawers and family photos. Did we just walk into somebody’s house? Nope, we’re in the Family Room of Columbia Heights’ newest addition, Social. Elegant, tasteful furnishings from Mitchell + Gold surround small tables and separate sitting areas where you can relax on couches and enjoy food and drinks. In fact, dishes come in three sizes, which encourage sampling and sharing with friends.
For Sunday brunch, served from 11:00am-3:00pm, I ordered something I haven’t seen anywhere else.
Bacon pancakes.
To amuse myself and you, I thought I’d get it with a side of bacon, but I’m not a pig. I got the cheese grits instead.
Three large, golden, fluffy pancakes hid bits of diced Canadian bacon. Lightly sprinkled with powdered sugar, with light syrup on the side, it made for a sweet-savory treat. The firm cheese grits were delicious, but I couldn’t figure out where the salmon coloring came from.
If you like hash browns, Social’s are some of the best in town. Small cubes of crispy potatoes are slightly greasy but well-seasoned and very satisfying.
Social is a refreshing change in Columbia Heights, and a classy place to enjoy a good meal and drinks with close friends. I plan to go back for dinner. I hear their Big Easy BBQ Shrimp are incredible!
