New Year’s Eve can be like amateur night. Folks who don’t go out all year are desperate to get dolled up, take their low tolerances out and ring in the new year “the right way.” Invariably, they wind up carrying their heels and walking barefoot, praising the porcelain goddess and passing out still dressed in their New Year’s finery.

If you must go out, here are some places that have been tested under normal circumstances that I’d try again for a special occasion.

I haven’t gone out on New Year’s since that time I had to walk from Bohemian Caverns to Children’s Hospital before a taxi driver took pity and gave me a free ride for $20.
