Pearl Dive Oyster Palace & Black Jack are throwing a pre-opening bash Saturday, September 10, 2011 from 6 pm to 1:30 am. This is your chance to get a glimpse of this latest, highly-anticipated addition to the Black Restaurant Group (Addie’s, Black’s Bar & Kitchen, BlackSalt).  Think oysters and bocce ball.

Proceeds from the evening go towards a state-of-the-art kitchen at the Washington Nationals Diabetes Care Complex at Children’s National Medical Center.

The third annual DC Beer Week returns August 14-21, 2011 to celebrate the craft beer movement in the National Capital Region with special events, cask nights, beer dinners, tastings, and more.

Restaurants and bars throughout the DC metro area, including Granville Moore’s, Churchkey/Birch & Barley, Smith Commons, Lyon Hall and Meridian Pint, have exciting events planned throughout the week.

Several local breweries are planning special “one-off” beers brewed especially for DC Beer Week that will be poured during the celebration, and home brewers are also getting into the action this year with a special competition organized by the DC Homebrewers Club to be held on Saturday, August 20th at the Red Palace on H Street, NE.

The week kicks off with the second annual DC Craft Beer Cruise & Dinner on the Potomac on August 14th, featuring a selection of more than 20 beers from breweries, a dinner buffet, DJ, dancing and breathtaking views from the Potomac River at dusk. Space is limited and tickets are expected to sell quickly.

Hey there Mary,

My wife and I are heading to DC Thursday to Sunday.  I’m a fellow restaurant/travel blogger, and I’ve learned over the years that the best suggestions for restaurants tend to come from fellow bloggers.  Care to share some spots we should hit? We’re pretty flexible in style of food, but our big meals will likely be lunches since we have events going on at night.

We have no dietary restrictions, and I’d say our taste especially at lunch will be more conventional. Price range is flexible…I have no problem paying for a great experience if it’s just that. We are staying near Union Station and will be traveling solely by Metro.

Ooh, I love questions like this, Deej!  After taking into account the days are you here, dietary restrictions/preferences, price range, taste, location, mode of transportation and familiarity with DC, these are the restaurants I recommend (in alphabetical order):

America Eats Tavern is a pop-up restaurant in the former Café Atlántico by Jose Andres. It’s showcasing American classics through the centuries. It’s steps from the Navy Memorial Metro.

No visit to DC is complete without a meal at Ben’s Chili Bowl.  It’s a super cheap greasy spoon where you must get the half-smoke with everything!  Bill Cosby, Barack Obama and just about every meat eater in DC is a fan.  Across the street from the U Street-African American Civil War Memorial Metro. continue reading… »
