Girl Meets Food

Ooh, something fun and different!  Oyamel, home of my grasshopper taco debacle,  is holding a Tequila and Mezcal Festival from March 1-14, 2010! Sample some of the highest quality tequila and mezcal during the free tastings Tuesdays through Thursdays from 4-6 pm during the festival.

Three exclusive flights will be offered at $15 and $16 and include The Siembra Azul Flight of Blanco, Reposado, Añejo and the Mezcal Flight featuring the Fidencio Mezcal, Del Maguey San Luis del Rio and Del Maguey la Crema.

The ultimate flight is José’s Favorites, featuring Siembra Azul Blanco, Fidencio Mezcal and Del Maguey Tobala.

Oyamel’s creative mixologists are also creating tempting tequila and mezcal cocktails ranging from $10 to $12. Try the Oaxacan Fizz, a twist on the Ramos Gin Fizz made with Fidencio Mezcal combined with house made horchata, Jerry Thomas bitters and egg white.

Also avaialabe, the Mexican Mai Tai with Siembra Azul Blanco and Añejo tequilas combined with fresh squeezed lime juice, Kahlúa and a touch of mint.

Special appearances by Arik Torren of Fidencio Mezcal on Tuesday, March 2nd and David Suro of Siembra Azul Tequila on Thursday, March 4th.

Walking down the aisle at BGR is like walking back in time to my awkward adolescence.  Album cover art adorn the walls.  A young Billy Idol is snarling at me.  Rod Stewart looks forever young.  And the mosaic art on my table says “Live Aid” with a depiction of Africa that actually looks more like a jacked-up jackfruit.

Would my dining experience prove to be more uncomfortable than wearing Coke-bottle glasses and a mouth full of metal while talking to Evan Rudutsky while he’s giving the prettiest girl in the class “the eye” while I sit there in awkward silence while I tug at my New Kids on the Block t-shirt?!

Hypothetically, I mean.

Designer burgers are the new cupcakes, and they are littered all over D.C. like so many colorful sprinkles.  But can they justify their designer prices?

Erica at the counter, like the rest of the staff, seemed bored and uninterested.  Not that I expect much service in a burger joint.  But one look at the prices, I thought maybe I should.

Ken Noli ordered the Southwestern Burger and a soda.  I ordered fries and a vanilla shake.  The bill came to over $20.00.  What the what?!  This $8.99 Southwestern had better come with a side of peyote.  Do you mean to tell me that if we both got complete meals, we would have spent $40.00 on burgers and fries? continue reading… »
